W. von Krenner was born in 1940 in
Bavaria, Germany and currently holds a 8th Dan in Aikido and 4th Dan in Judo. Von Krenner
Sensei started Kodokan Judo and Daito-ryu Aikijujitsu in 1957 with H. Steffin Sensei in
Germany. In 1958 he became a student of Nagaoka Sensei of Kodokan and Kondo Sensei in
Basle, Switzerland.
He attended the German National Championship in Hamborn in
1959, and thereafter went to Paris, France to study at the famous Salle Pleyel Dojo where
Anton Gesink and Courtin Senseis were teaching at the time.
He came to the United States in 1960 and began to train in
H. Sharp Sensei's dojo where Gene Le Bell worked out . He also studied Karate with
Nishiyama Sensei during this time, but did not continue in this discipline after he
started Aikido.
In 1961 he started Aikido with Takahashi Isao Sensei and
Tohei Koichi Sensei.
He also trained and studied Kendo and Iaido with Mori and
Miahara Sr. Sensei until 1967, when he left for Japan to study Aikido at Hombu Dojo in
Shinjuku while O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, was still alive and
teaching.
During his stay at the Hombu dojo he also had the opportunity to
train with the founders son, Ueshiba Kisshomaru, the late Dosshu. Von Krenner Sensei
left Japan in 1968 shortly before the death of the founder.
He moved to Hawaii to continue to train with Tohei Koichi
and Suzuki Sensei until the Ki no Kenkyu Kai separation, after which he joined Yoshioka
Sensei's dojo. He continued training and teaching in this dojo after Aoyagi Sensei became
Shihan.
In 1981, he left Aoyagi Sensei and moved to Montana where
he started Sandokan Aikido Schools, where he is currently teaching Aikido and Kendo.
Von Krenner Sensei also teaches Japanese art and
calligraphy at the Flathead Valley Community College.
Sensei returned to Japan in 1972-73, 1975 and 1994 for
further study of Aikido and sword related arts.
Von Krenner Sensei
is the co-author of a book titled: Training with the Master:
Lessons with Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido. This book is about his experiences and
